Level with Me is a project of Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand, designed to get people thinking about social and global inequality. It links with our Social Justice Week 2011 focus On a level playing field: fair play and the common good. We’re not knocking international sporting competitions (though questions can be raised about their social cost and who really benefits, who loses). But we’d like to see the positive values on the sporting field – fairness, an equal chance of success, unbiased refereeing – reflected in the social world. So that everyone has a chance, on a level playing field, to fulfil their potential.
Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand is the Catholic agency for justice, peace and development. We are working for a world free of poverty and injustice through community development, advocacy, education, and emergency relief. We work to change structures that cause poverty, and help people understand the underlying causes of poverty and injustice. We are part of the international Caritas network of 168 Catholic relief, development and social service organisations.
DISCLAIMER: Level with Me is intended to provoke thought and comment on social inequality, and promote discussion on what makes for a ‘fair society’. We do not seek to provide a comprehensive assessment of the relative equality/inequality of the nations discussed. The social indicators used are just that – indicators, and others could be chosen. Views and comment do not represent the official position of Caritas.
